One of California’s leading contemporary wood artists, Jeremy Sullivan has been a professional woodturner for more than 20 years. His fine lidded boxes have been featured widely in exhibitions, galleries, shops, and added to private collections in the US and elsewhere. Self-taught as Sam Maloof was, Jeremy has found success in box making by adhering to established fundamentals, while also setting new standards for some commonly overlooked details of the craft.
This one-day, hands-on workshop, limited to just four participants learning first-hand from Jeremy, teaches you how to turn lidded boxes that are useful and attractive. Jeremy shares lessons learned in production, and tips for selling, offering guidance and inspiration to help participants find their own voice and style, with new levels of enjoyment.
The 8-hour course provides detailed instruction and hands-on practice at a lathe, with Jeremy providing step-by-step instructions for successful completion. Working within Jeremy’s proven framework, participants will be encouraged to get creative with design details or “stick the plan” to focus on technique and fully absorb the technical side of the instruction.
You will learn how to:
Use and sharpen gouges and scrapers more effectively
Rough-turn boxes for drying and for improving the lid fit later
Hollow end grain effectively and quickly
Use the skew chisel to great effect, and quickly learn how to prevent catches
Develop a perfect suction-fit lid that “glides gently down” to close
Apply simple tweaks that take pieces from average to exceptional
Find inspiration, express your own unique voice, and enjoy the rewards.
Drinks and snacks are provided, but please pack a lunch for the 1-hour mid-day meal break, in The Maloof’s olive tree-shaded courtyard, weather permitting.
Participants must be 18 years or older
